Andreta Cultural Centre & Resort, Himachal Pradesh | Hospitality Architecture

Location

Andreta

Project type

Architecture

Nestled in the tranquil Dhauladhar valley of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, is the proposed the Cultural Experience Centre & Resort Complex in Andreta. Drawing from Andretta's rich legacy as an artists' refuge established by Norah Richards and frequented by masters like Sobha Singh and B.C. Sanyal, this proposal presents a visionary facility that bridges regional Himachali heritage with contemporary hospitality and cultural tourism.

The proposal outlines an eco-conscious master plan designed to seamlessly integrate public creative hubs including dedicated painting and pottery workshops, exhibition galleries, and performance venues with luxury, eco-sustainable resort accommodations.

The architectural identity of the proposed complex is deeply rooted in the vernacular tradition of Himachal Pradesh, incorporating modern reinterpretations of traditional Kath-Kuni and Dhajji-Diwari construction methods. The core design philosophy emphasizes a sensitive dialogue between built structures and the existing topography, minimizing environmental impact while enhancing the natural beauty of the site.

To avoid massive earthwork and preserve mature trees, the proposed layout breaks down the program into human-scaled, interconnected pavilions rather than a single monolithic building. Central and pocket courtyards form the organizational backbone of the development, providing microclimate control, passive air movement, and intuitive transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Steeply pitched slate and timber rooflines are designed to handle heavy monsoonal rain and winter snowfall while framing the skyline. Carefully positioned skylights are planned for gallery and studio spaces to supply glare-free, north-facing daylight ideal for artists and visitors.

The spatial zoning of the proposed master plan is structured into three distinct zones:

* The Public Cultural Zone is situated near the primary entrance points to welcome visitors, housing interactive craft workshops, exhibition spaces, and an open-air amphitheater.

* The Semipublic Amenity Core is centrally positioned to serve both day visitors and resort guests, incorporating open-air dining, community lounges, and calming water features.

* The Private Resort Zone occupies the quietest and most elevated parts of the terrain, offering secluded guest suites with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

The structural approach combines time-tested local materials with modern engineering to ensure structural durability and high seismic resistance in Seismic Zone V:

* High-thermal-mass load-bearing walls made of local dressed stone and timber framing are specified to stabilize indoor temperatures across seasons.

* Expansive glass gable endwalls frame view corridors toward the Dhauladhar range while bringing natural light deep into double-height interior volumes.

* Exposed timber joinery and structural rafters celebrate regional woodworking craftsmanship throughout the public and private spaces.

* Wooden boardwalks, terraced decks, and reflective water bodies are incorporated to provide natural evaporative cooling and enhance spatial serenity.

The passive environmental design strategy optimizes solar orientation along the east-west axis to maximize winter solar heat gain, complemented by generous roof overhangs for summer shading. Operable skylights and high ceiling vaults utilize stack-effect ventilation to minimize reliance on mechanical HVAC systems. Sustainable site features include permeable ground surfaces, bioswales, and integrated rainwater collection systems designed to supply landscape irrigation and maintain on-site water features.
