Cosmos: Astro Tourism Centre in Bir, Himachal Pradesh | Recreational Architecture
Location
Bir, Himachal Pradesh
Project type
Architecture
COSMOS is a visionary architectural proposal for an International Astronomy Park and Space Tourism Centre designed to bridge the gap between scientific education, eco-tourism, and immersive celestial exploration. Conceived as a state-of-the-art facility for astro-enthusiasts, researchers, and global travelers, the project integrates advanced observation infrastructure with sustainable hospitality. By leveraging dark-sky preservation, natural topography, and cutting-edge architectural detailing, COSMOS establishes a benchmark for astro-tourism destinations worldwide.
The master planning philosophy for COSMOS centers on absolute harmony with natural contour lines and slope topography. Recognizing that the night sky requires minimal light pollution and pristine natural surroundings, the site is systematically zoned into a seamless continuum of exploration. The visitor access and arrival zone features a secure main access road, dedicated parking for 35 vehicles, a service entry, and a welcoming visitors lounge designed to orient guests before their celestial journey. Positioned centrally, the Experience Centre and Planetarium core serves as the primary scientific and educational focal point, housing interactive exhibition spaces, a central planetarium crowned by a geodesic dome, administrative zones, and a cafeteria that opens out to panoramic valley views.
Designed as an integral structural component that interacts uniquely with both subterranean contours and above-ground levels, the observatory offers an immersive environment for stargazing and scientific research. Additionally, the astro-cabins cluster consists of a collection of elevated, circular eco-cabins connected by winding, organic elevated walkways. These cabins are elevated on pilotis to preserve the natural ground flora, offering private, uninterrupted stargazing decks and panoramic glass roofs. The internal organization of the main Experience Centre utilizes a concentric, circular floor plan that optimizes horizontal circulation and structural efficiency. The ground floor plan accommodates primary public entry lobbies, ticketing, administrative back-of-house areas, and transit cores, anchoring the building into the hillside contour. The first floor plan houses specialized exhibition zones, digital planetarium seating rings, seminar spaces, and public gathering decks that frame the surrounding nightscape. Clearly segregated pathways, service routes, and lift lobbies ensure smooth visitor flow without disrupting research and technical operations. The architectural expression of COSMOS is driven by advanced structural typologies tailored to high-altitude terrain and specialized functional requirements. The central planetarium features a structural geodesic dome constructed with precision-engineered tension and compression members, optimized for load distribution and acoustic clarity. The multi-tier circular floors employ reinforced concrete (RCC) framing with radial beams and cantilevered viewing rings that project outward toward the landscape. Exterior glazed assemblies utilize modern spider-glass point-fixing techniques, minimizing visible framing to create unbroken visual connections between the interior exhibits and the exterior natural environment. Furthermore, circular columns are structurally designed with closely spaced hoop reinforcement to ensure high seismic resilience and structural integrity.
As a pioneering astro-tourism destination, sustainability is embedded into every layer of the design proposal. Lighting design strategies prioritize downward-facing, low-intensity fixtures to eliminate light pollution and preserve the nocturnal environment. The use of elevated walkways and staggered cabin modules ensures minimal disruption to existing soil strata, vegetation, and natural drainage paths. Moreover, high-performance insulation, double-glazed structural glass, and strategic orientation harness solar heat gain while maintaining comfortable interior microclimates across changing seasonal temperatures.
