Airport 2100: Futuristic Airport Design | Fentress Global Challenge

Location

Los Angeles, USA

Project type

Architecture

Airport 2100 is a conceptual airport design developed for the Fentress Global Challenge, exploring how airport architecture and passenger experiences might evolve by the year 2100. The proposal reimagines the airport as more than a transportation hub, envisioning it as a connected, people-focused environment shaped by future mobility, contemporary urban life, and evolving architectural possibilities.

The design is defined by fluid roof forms, sweeping structural lines, and layered terminal volumes that create a distinctive architectural identity. The central terminal brings together the surrounding wings beneath a continuous sculptural roof, while the elevated, curved forms establish a sense of movement and visual continuity across the complex. Integrated greenery and landscaped terraces introduce natural elements into the airport environment, balancing the scale of the infrastructure with more inviting public spaces.

Through its emphasis on form, connectivity, and the relationship between architecture and landscape, the project explores new possibilities for futuristic airport design. Airport 2100 reflects Rootsense’s exploration of forward-looking architecture and the potential of transportation infrastructure to become more integrated, engaging, and responsive to the needs of future travellers.

Developed as a competition proposal, the project offers a vision for the airport of the future—where architectural expression and the experience of travel come together to shape the next generation of aviation environments.
