Mangrove Eco-Towers | High-Rise Architecture in the Sundarbans
Location
Sunderbans
Project type
Architecture
Set within the distinctive landscape of the Sundarbans, the Mangrove Eco-Towers project explores an alternative approach to tall building design, where architecture draws inspiration from the surrounding mangrove ecosystem. Developed as a competition entry for the CTBUH International Tall Building Competition, the proposal investigates how vertical architecture can coexist with sensitive natural environments while creating meaningful connections between people, water, and landscape.
The design features sculptural tower forms defined by an expressive structural framework, permeable façades, and integrated vegetation. Inspired by the layered growth and interconnected root systems of mangroves, the towers explore a relationship between structure and nature, allowing the architecture to feel open to its surroundings rather than isolated from them.
Elevated bridges and shared spaces connect the towers across the river landscape, creating a network of movement and gathering that responds to the water as a defining element of the site. The interplay of shaded spaces, planted surfaces, and open structural layers establishes a distinctive architectural identity while exploring opportunities for passive environmental design.
Through this proposal, Rootsense examines the potential of sustainable high-rise architecture to move beyond conventional vertical development. The project envisions a future in which tall buildings respond to local ecology, reinterpret natural systems, and foster a closer relationship between the built environment and the landscape.
