Modern Apartment InteriorA minimalist NCR apartment features neutral tones, a cozy sectional sofa, a stylish black coffee table, and an artistic patterned chair, creating a harmonious living space.

Most urban apartments in NCR follow similar layouts - fixed walls, predefined bathroom locations, standard finishes and limited flexibility for spatial changes. When the clients approached us for House AnA, their biggest concern wasn’t just aesthetics. They wanted their home to feel emotionally disconnected from the dense surroundings outside.

The challenge was to transform a standard 2,000 sq. ft. builder apartment into a warm, functional and calming home for a young family of three — without making major structural modifications.

Working Within a Fixed Apartment Layout

Before: The original apartment had darker finishes and visually heavy surfaces that made the interiors feel compact.

Like most apartment projects, the floor plan came with limitations. The shafts, bathrooms and major service areas were fixed, leaving little room for conventional planning changes.

Instead of focusing on demolition-heavy interventions, the design strategy relied on:

  • visual openness,

  • integrated storage,

  • layered lighting,

  • and a restrained material palette.

The goal was simple: make the apartment feel lighter, calmer and more personal.

Creating Calm Through Material and Colour

Warm textures and restrained contrasts helped soften the apartment visually.

The original apartment had darker finishes and visually heavy surfaces that made the interiors feel compact.

To soften the experience of the space, the design introduced a warm neutral palette with oak textures, soft fabrics and controlled black accents. Large graphic elements and subtle patterns helped create character without overwhelming the apartment visually.

The result is minimal without feeling cold — an important balance for family homes.

Reimagining Underused Spaces

One of the most impactful interventions was the conversion of the underused servant room into a lounge-study.

Originally disconnected from the main home, the space was redesigned as a multifunctional den for work, reading and everyday family use. A concealed entry integrated it seamlessly into the living area, helping the apartment feel more connected and efficient.

This became an important strategy in maximising functionality without altering the apartment’s structural framework.

Storage Designed Into the Architecture

In compact urban homes, clutter can quickly make spaces feel smaller. Instead of adding standalone storage elements, the project integrated storage within wall panelling, bedrooms and transition spaces to maintain visual continuity throughout the apartment. This helped preserve the clean and calming atmosphere the clients were looking for.

Lighting as an Emotional Layer

Lighting played a major role in changing how the apartment feels throughout the day.

Track lights, pendant fixtures and soft indirect lighting were layered carefully to create warmth and depth across the interiors. Natural light was also amplified through lighter finishes and softer visual transitions between spaces.

Together, these elements helped create a stronger sense of openness despite the dense urban surroundings outside.

A Modern Apartment Designed Around Everyday Living

House AnA demonstrates how thoughtful interior design strategies can completely transform the experience of apartment living — even within highly fixed layouts.

Rather than relying on excessive materials or large structural changes, the project focuses on balance, warmth and emotional comfort.

The result is a modern home that feels calm, functional and deeply personal within NCR’s fast-paced residential environment.
